Visit to Roof Top garden - 20 February 2017

The visitors from the Club reached the roof top garden at 44 Wale Street after using the lifts, climbing stairs and seeing the business end of the building full of machinery and plumbing, to be greeted by this sight !

The manager of the garden, Jacques Du Toit, is shown below with chairlady Barbara, greeting the Club.

Jacques, being an environmental officer with City of Cape Town, told us of many instances where he had to find ways to build the garden without money being budgeted for the project.

The garden was created as a space for staff to go during breaks or to have meetings out of the office. It also is a trial garden to see which plants are best suited to the harsh conditions, wind and temperature
.

The whole area is lined with wood, from gum trees, floor sides and overhead. Plastic crates are stacked three high round the perimeter, with some planted with indigenous plants.

There is also a wetland that has a solar powered pump to circulate the water.

The talk was very interesting, and we wish Jacques all the best in his innovative effort to "Green" Cape Town.
